Ok, I know you just read that section and thought, what is that picture of? Well, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! I just wanted to tease you a little and keep you reading. That stunning scene is from a nighttime kayak tour of Mosquito Bay, located just east of the main island on Vieques Island. Mosquito Bay boasts the largest accumulation of bioluminescence in the world. But don’t just take my word for it— here’s a snippet from the Discover Puerto Rico website about Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay:
“The brightest bioluminescence effect in the world can be found on the magical island of Vieques, but don’t take our word for it— it was recognized by the Guinness World Record in 2006. Vieques’s breathtaking Mosquito Bay has also been designated as one of the 2020s Seven Wonders of the World by Condé Nast Traveller.
Located to the east of Puerto Rico’s main island, the small island of Vieques can be reached either by ferry or via a small plane. Once in Vieques, you’d want to arrange a kayak tour of the bay with one of the island’s tour providers (some of them even have clear-bottom kayaks!). When planning your visit, it’s important to consider the phases of the moon, as the glowing effect is better appreciated during nights with a new or crescent moon.”
Pretty cool, right? It’s truly a must-see when you visit the island! Whether you’re kayaking in a regular or clear-bottom boat, this magical experience will leave you in awe of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders.

An extra added note, these spots often have the added bonus of meeting fellow travelers, and they usually offer kitchens so you can save by cooking some of your own meals. Explore ultimate budget travel tips for more accommodation ideas that suit every itinerant explorer.
Another great option is to look for VRBO rentals. You’ll often find affordable, cozy rooms or entire apartments for less than the cost of a hotel. Plus, many hosts are locals who can offer fantastic tips on what to do nearby. Not sure about the whole VRBO(Vacation Rental By Owner) thing…. This guide shows that it is ineed possible to travel to Puerto Rico on a small budget. AirBnB is indeed a good option to find affordable accommodation in foreign destinations. And hostels also offer cheap rooms and beds for travellers. But is there an age restriction for staying in a hostel? Is it available for over fifties?
You mention getting to know the locals for getting ideas and hints. But do the Puerto Ricans speak English? Or is it a Spanish speaking region? How safe is Puerto Rico for female travellets? Thank you.
Hey LineCowley!
Thanks for your great questions!
1. Hostels: Most welcome all ages, including over-50s. No worries there!
2. Language: Puerto Rico is bilingual. Spanish is primary, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas.
3. Safety for women: Generally safe, but use common sense precautions as you would anywhere.(if you don’t feel comfortable man/woman or child always leave, you don’t go down a back street in the dark by yourself in an unknow area by anyone anywhere unless you know the area!!)
Locals are a mix of Spanish and English speakers, and they’re known for their friendliness. You’ll manage just fine!
Hope this helps. Any more questions, just shout!
Happy trails,
Opa
Thanks for the insightful article on Puerto Rico. It sounds like such an exotic place with a great variety of experiences and places to visit on offer. The idea of the food trucks is very appealing. Sometimes eating like this seems more real than eating in fancy restaurants. Is there a particular time of the year when the weather is the best time to visit? How much time would you suggest staying there to see the main attractions? Thanks again for an informative article.
Hi Lyn,
Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you found the article helpful. Puerto Rico truly is an exotic destination with a vibrant mix of culture and experiences. I completely agree—food trucks often provide a more authentic taste of local cuisine!
As for the best time to visit, many people recommend going between December and April when the weather is typically dry and pleasant. If you want to see the main attractions comfortably, I’d suggest planning for at least a week. This will give you time to explore the beautiful beaches, historic sites, and enjoy the local flavors at those amazing food trucks!
If you have any more questions or need further tips, feel free to ask. Happy travels!
Best,
Opa
